Week 43 (8.06.01 - 8.12.01)
Top 40
For every year of your life pick one song and only one song. (It doesn't have to be from that year but it helps.) You should have 40 songs, enough to tape your life in music. For example, my song for 1982 would be "Centerfold" by the J. Geils Band. Whenever I hear it I immediately think of riding the bus in 2nd grade. For 1992-93 it would be "Move It" because I moved to college. Also, you could write some reason for every song but I bet the tape would speak for itself.
I found this to be a tough assignment. I love so many songs for so many different reasons. Some reminded me of my parents, my brother, my sister, my friends and myself. Some strongly reminded me of a period in my life, be it really good (e.g. buying my first CB radio) or really bad (e.g. listening to the Unicorn as my father drove me to the hospital with my first broken arm). I tried to concentrate on "pop" songs, the ones that "taste" like a favorite candy. The majority of the songs are representative of an album, a musician or group that I love and enjoy. A few are one hit wonders or groups that captured my attention for just a short period of time. I limited the list to one song per group and more roughly one per year.
I loved this assignment and can't stop thinking about other options. I have a list of my top 100 that I will publish shortly. Certain periods like the mid 70's and early 80's were filled with so many favorites.
As for tapes/CD of these hits. I've pulled all of them together. Let me know if you want to relive my musical past and I'll see what I can do.
